For the record

Everyone’s Tumblr is their own, and I respect that. However, there are certain things I do not and will not respect on my dash. If I see them, then I’m going to call whoever posted it out. Now, I’m not always the most articulate person and I am often quick to jump to conclusions and snap judgements.

But there are things that, to the very core of my being, I will not tolerate.

  • FAT SHAMING
  • SLUT SHAMING
  • SEXISM
  • RACISM
  • HETEROSEXISM
  • HOMOPHOBIA
  • RAPE JOKES
  • CHILD ABUSE JOKES

This is by no means an all-inclusive list; however, it’s a good place to start. If you know me, if you respect me, if you respect other people, this is a good starter list of things that you shouldn’t find funny or participate in.

Why?

Because when you post things on the internet, other people can and do see them. That’s why you put it on Tumblr to begin with. If a few seconds of laughter at your graceless humor is all you’re after, then go right on ahead - posting things that are thoughtlessly hurtful and unexpectedly (to you) damaging.

But if you want to be clever, legitimately funny, and respected in turn, you’ll consider the consequences of the posts you publish and the attitudes you convey. Contributing to and relishing in your own privilege looks good on absolutely no body. Challenge your sense of what’s funny - if it marginalizes someone else, if it pokes fun at someone for being fat, gay, disabled, a victim, a survivor, a person of color, a person without a home or without much money - it’s not actually funny. It’s hurtful, and it’s cruel, and you really should know better.

In school, they call it bullying. As “adults,” it parades behind a mask of humor, puns, blog posts, and power - but it’s still all the same.

Simply; it’s wrong. And I will not continue to scroll past things on my dash or walk past things in my life that are inherent power plays and marginalizations of oppressed populations.
